Devon Entomology (insects), Devon Geology, Devon History, Devon
Literature, Folklore and Dialect
First established in 1862, the DA is unique in the county for the breadth of its interests and for bringing together amateurs and professionals Join us and
learn more about or contribute to knowledge on Devon. Meet people
who have similar interests and participate in the many activities
and events that we organise. Membership is open to all, whether or
not you were born in Devon or even live in the county
Members can join one of the Sections: Botany, Buildings, Entomology,
Geology, History, Literature, Folklore and Dialect. Sections
organise a programme of meetings, lectures and visits. In addition,
members can join a local Branch
and attend lectures and visits that each Branch organises
The Association publishes a major periodical:
Report and Transactions of the Devonshire Association
for the Advancement of Science (Transactions) in
which reports from the Sections and Branches are published,
together with the address of the President, and a collection of
(peer reviewed) scholarly papers
The Association also periodically runs
courses on various subjects. For details of those
currently being offered, or planned for the future, as well as the
charges, go to courses.
Early every June the Association holds a three-day Annual Conference open to all
members. A different venue in Devon hosts the meeting each year. In
addition to local visits and excursions, an annual dinner and the
AGM, there is a lively programme of presentations, a public lecture
and the formal installation of the honorary president, who then
addresses the Association
You can choose to be either a
Full Member (full voting rights and copy of
Transactions) or an Associate Member (no

This web site has been supported by a bequest made to
