Devon’s Seaside
Saturday 16 April 2011
The Mint Methodist Church Centre, Exeter, EX4 3AT, 10.00 am - 4.30
pm
This is the sixth in the DA’s very
successful series of Symposia and, this year, the theme is
Devon’s Seaside. Devon is famous for its seaside and, in this
symposium, the unique character of the county’s seaside
resorts, large and small, will be explored including what they owe
to the past, and how they have adapted to meet modern patterns of
holidays and transport. The economic contribution made by seaside
resorts to the local economy will also be considered. Today,
resorts like Torbay and Exmouth have large residential populations,
with a high proportion of retired people, but also young people for
whom it is necessary to provide employment. Our resorts are also
not immune from national social problems such as the misuse of
drugs and alcohol. The theme for the day will therefore be:
‘Devon’s seaside - sunshine and shadows’. Hosted
by the DA President - the well-known Roger Thorne - the symposium
promises to be another highly enjoyable, thought-provoking and
lively day (tickets: £20 include morning coffee, buffet lunch
with a soft drink, and afternoon tea)
